Windows updates are necessary for the security of your computer and the company's network. What isn't necessary, though, is for forced restarts to occur during your working hours.

Be sure to occasionally select the Restart option when you're done working for the day. Do not always choose Shut down as that puts your computer into a Fast Startup or "hyber-boot" state which may not allow Windows updates to complete. Restart is the best option to ensure you are not postponing updates indefinitely. Using the "shut down" option exclusively can result in Windows eventually forcing the restart at a bad time.

Change active hours to prevent poorly timed and/or forced computer reboots

  1. Go to your Start menu and click Settings

  2. Click on Update & Security

  3. Now Change active hours

  4. I'd recommend turning off the automatic adjustment and setting your typical shift manually.
